Better Rider Better Ride Becoming fit will lead to real breakthroughs in you riding. By following this detailed program, you'll find tremendous improvement in areas such as posture, reaction time, body composition, balance and coordination, discipline, and more. The first good thing about this book is that the author rightly advises you to take it and yourself to a good professional personal trainer to help you get these particular exercises right. One should never just look and attempt such stuff on your own. Second good thing - the "model" in the photographs is a gal who looks like she is a real person, they didn't go for the willowly type like Uma Thurman or Gwyneth Paltrow. This definitely makes the reader feel like perhaps she/he can really do it without having to look like a movie star. Our model has thighs that have definition! Examples of how "not to" are easy to understand and view. Some nutrition tips are included and also some examples of working out with you on your horse. The last graphic is "The Circle of Development: Good vs. Bad Riding" and might be good to put up in our tackbox as a stimulus to work on ourselves and then work in partnership with our horses. A comprehensive book, one must put the suggestions into practice to gain strength and improve one's riding, you cannot just read it and get there! - Carolyn Del Grosso |

Equine ER:
Stories from a Year in the Liife of an Equine Veterinary Hospital This book takes readers on a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the leading equine veterinary hospitals, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital of Lexington, KY. It captures the often dramatic, sometimes heartbreaking, but all-inspiring stories the author witnessed during her years at the hospital. Equine ER is a window into the emotional journeys the doctors and owners embark on when a beloved horse falls ill and the powerful love and connection between humans and horses. The stories in this book are truely inspiring but often heartbreaking. Reading this book made me appreciate my vet even more than Ia already do. The photos are not for the faint of heart. All in all, a good interesting read if you can handle the sometimes graphic content. - Katherine O. Rizzo |
The Further Adventures of the $700 Pony This book takes you on a journey with Ellen and her ignoble steed as they travel the road to Equine Enlightenment, seeking the elusive Zen of Riding. Follow Ellen and her earnest equines as they traverse the Winter Jumper Show, negotiate Farm Renovation and navigate the Suburban Halloween Parade, all in the name of seeking peace and tranquility. Joined by the Demon Spawn, a Wee Spotted Driving Pont, Nearly-Headless Yummie and assorted farm characters, the road is hilariously rocky. I remember reading Ellen Broadhurst's first book, The Chronicles of the $700 Pony, and thinking it was a quick fun read and very much enjoyed it. Broadhurst has a great way with words and the stories within the book are ones that many horse owners can relate to in some way. With that said, The Futher Adventures of the $700 Pony falls a bit short of its predecessor. Broadhurt's witty humor is still there, however the stories seem a bit old, and one will start to think at times that they've heard them before, and you probably have in the first book. Needless to say, the writing is still good, the book is still a quick easy read and is perfect for that horse owner or farm owner who just needs to laugh a moment at someone else's daily farm life debacles. - Katherine O. This book contains photographs of horses of color, including Assateague ponies. This title is the fifth book of horse photographs by noted race horse photographer Livingston. Bbe prepared to be delighted, astounded and amazed by the magnificent and unusual color of the horses and the artistry she employs in her works. It's our good fortune that she investigates all types of horses in addition to her beloved thoroughbreds. The brindle Brazilian warmblood stallion, the North American Curly Horse, Knabstrupers (only 100 exist in the USA), a zorse, a zonkey, a sabino, primitive marks on a Colonial Spanish Horse, the pintaloosa, birdcatcher spots, the tobiano mini, Tetrarch spots, the Przewalski Horse will all amaze you with their eye-catching color. The artistry of Livingston's photographs often hold one in awe such as the stylelized photo on page 112. Those of us who have been around horses for many years and seen and read many horse books may become a little jaded about yet another "coffee table" book. Don't be shy about HORSES IN LIVING COLOR, go out and buy one for yourself or beg for one as a gift. You'll want to delve into it more than once and your non-horsey friends can enjoy it as well. - LuAnne Levens |

The Most Glorious Crown: The Story of America's Triple Crown Thoroughbreds from Sir Barton to Affirmed (book and DVD) After more than 130 years of trying, only 11 colts have swept the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes to earn the Triple Crown. The book, along with a full-length 100-minte DVD on the history of horse racing, delves into the history of each Triple Crown Champion, their jockeys, owners, trainers and specific accounts of each race leading up to their Triple Crown win. This book is a reissue, and since we haven't had a Triple Crown winner since 1978, there's nothing new in the book, but tucked into the inside front cover is a History Channel prodution called "Win, Place, or Show - The History of Horse Racing." On the surface, it's a great DVD, with fabulous old photos and early movies about the races and great horses like Man O' War (not a Triple Crown winner), and ostensibly it's about Triple Crown winners. As a Marylander, it's shocking how infrequently Maryland is mentioned. Phrases like "the premier tracks in the country, Churchill Downs, Belmont, Saratoga" are spouted by the narrator, even in a segment on Triple Crown winners, and last time I checked, Saratoga wasn't on the Triple Crown circuit. In the segment on Secretariat, his time in Batlimre begins with "Penny Chenery shipped him to Baltimore", then features an interview with her in which she describes his leap in front of the stands. There is only one still photo from the Preakness, and then off to Belmont, where the video of his amazing win is played in its entirity. For race fans, Secretariat's Preakness is not without controversy, and none of that is mentioned. Overall, the DVD is riveting for anyone for even a passing interest in horses. The old movies and stills are fascinating (there's a picture of Man O' War in his coffin during his public funeral), and some of the most interesting characters (horse and human) in racing are highlighted. It's great to remember why racing was once one ot the nation's favorite pasttimes, and why it's not just the sad spectre of guys in the bottom recesses of the grandstands betting on horses, hoping for a win, but not caring about the horses that race. Sadly, if I knew nothing about horses, I would think that breeding Thoroughbreds only happens in Kentucky, and that the Triple Crown is comprised of the Derby, Belmont, and some race in Maryland. - Tracy McKenna |

Pilates for the Dressage Rider (DVD) This DVD is the companion to the best-selling book Pilates for the Dressage Rider. The DVD helps dressage riders develop the core strength, good posture and muscle flexibility integral to success in the saddle using Pilates exercises. Viewers will slowly and methodically learn each exercise, then apply them to real time workout. Basic and advanced exercises are included, as well as Pilates exercises in the saddle. This companion DVD goes well with the book. The demonstrations of the exercises are clear and pretty easy to follow. The workout can get pretty intense but plenty of warnings to not cause yourself pain and ways to make the exercises less intense. I like the idea of riders developing core strength and control over the back, arms and legs. As a grand prix rider and instructor, I am not sure I agree with how the pilates instructor applies the exercises to the dressage movements. A great gift for any rider who wants to get the core body in shape and under control. - Carolyn Del Grosso |
Prince Alley Em of Loafing Hills Farm Prince Alley Em is the sequel to Mary Ann Powell's first book, Emerson. The book is set at the Spencer family's Loafing Hills Horse Farm in the Sugarloaf Mountains of Maryland. The farm maintains horses used for schooling, showing and trail riding. The story follows Carol and her friend Gloria as they experience new and different equine adventures. Although fiction, Mary Ann Powell's novel blends actual Maryland horse people with the fictional characters of Loafing Hills Farm. Local readers will enjoy reading about the Marylanders, but may find the eventing inaccuracies a little distracting. Best suited for 'tweens" and young teen readers with a good vocabulary, this book can be enjoyed without having read the first book. For those who did read the first novel in the series, read on about the further adventures of Carol & Gloria as they explore new riding disciplines. - Tracy McKenna |
